My name is Ian Juha Cho. I am an undergraduate student at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign majoring in computer science. I primarily develop(and learn) computer OS. (Surprisingly, I have been doing that for 7.95 years now.)
People would often say to me, "Why build an OS when there's Linux or Windows?" Well, I have my own reasoning. Most of what I do can be summarized as "building from scratch" projects, which some people might find not-so-worthwhile, as you are essentially recreating things that might already exist. In my years doing OS, I also questioned that a lot. "Why build this, when we already have this?" However, I've come to a conclusion about that question once and for all, and it's not that complicated: I simply do them because I love them. They let me learn all the interesting details of things and their specifications, and oftentimes let me have some freedom to make my own systems within them. These are the things I love about computer science—the joy of learning, appreciating the craftsmanship of the details, making things from what you've learned, seeing your creation do exactly what you envisioned, or sometimes things you never expected. So, my answer to that question is that I just tried to find something I truly love, and as I found it, it just happened to be OSdev. That's all!
